Public schools should be enforcing dress code

Should public schools have a dress code and who should be responsible for developing it? Some people believe that dress codes are important to ensure that students do not become distracted by other students' expressions of individuality in the way they dress. They also believe that dress codes teach students what will be expected of them by way of dress in the "real" world of work and responsibility. Those who argue against dress codes in public schools say that they are restrictive and repressive. They believe that public school students should be allowed to express their individuality in their choice of clothes as long as they do not endanger their lives or the lives of those around them (by wearing gang colors or insignia, for instance). They argue that as long as what a student wears does not interfere with his or her ability to receive an education (which is why the student is in school to begin with), he or she should be allowed to wear whatever he or she pleases.

Write an argumentative essay in which you clearly state your position on whether public schools should have a dress code or not. Your audience is a group' of local school board members and parents who must make a decision on this matter and have not yet made up their minds.

Assignment:  In a well-developed, organized, and grammatically correct essay, present a well-supported scholarly argument/position on one of the above topics.  The essay must use at least THREE SOURCES found using the CTC Online Databases for this assignment (See the instructions for using the CTC Online Databases handout), and it can use as many other credible sources (regular internet sources, books, articles, etc.) that you want as long as the sources do not dominate the paper. Be sure and use your sources only to support the points that YOU make FIRST, not to replace your own points and ideas (otherwise it is merely a cut and paste paper of other people’s ideas). Note: All sources MUST be correctly documented using MLA style. Plagiarism will be punished severely!!! The essay should follow the outline found below:

I. Introduction (1 paragraph): Catch reader’s attention, introduce topic in very general terms, very briefly provide needed background information and state and underline your thesis. You must take some kind of a firm position on this issue (otherwise it is not a persuasive essay) and your thesis must be a claim supported by reasons (it must have a plan of development). I.e. The death penalty should be kept legal because it teaches criminals that there are serious consequences for committing serious crimes, it deters future criminal actions from occurring, and it is a more economical and logical alternative than life imprisonment.

II. Presentation of Writer’s Position (several paragraphs): Present your position on this issue and support it with facts (not opinions), logical reasons, examples, personal experiences, and correctly cited quotations from outside sources, interviews, polls, statistics, and more. This section must use a minimum of 3 outside sources—at least two direct quotations per body paragraph. Remember, continually tell the readers why they should take the position you are arguing for and try to anticipate and address any likely objections to your argument.

III. Conclusion (1 paragraph):
Make concluding remarks, tie up all loose ends, restate your thesis, and make a call for action.

Mr. Everett (Title-Centered)

Egg Donation: A Potentially Disastrous Technology

Have you ever wanted to create the perfect child? That is exactly what many

wealthy couples have sought to do recently through the use of the reproductive

technologies of egg donation and in vitro fertilization. But perhaps a better question to

ask is this: is tampering with the process of creating human life something that may have

drastic and tragic consequences in the future? ……………………………………………

………………………………………………………………………………………………

………………………………………. ……………………………Egg donation should

be made completely illegal because it is a potentially disastrous practice that could have

negative medical, social, and ethical effects on the donor, the actual child that is created,

and on society as a whole.

The issue of egg donation is very controversial and there are many arguments for

and against it. One author who is for the legalization of this technology argues that the

benefits to infertile couples far outweigh the disadvantages. This article, “Miracle

Babies,” gives several examples to support her claims. For example, the author mentions

the fact that several infertile couples have been able to have children as a result of this

technology: “Arceli Keh and her husband, both age 62, were able to give birth to a son as

a result of this technology” (“Miracle Babies” 23). ……………………………………
